This past month a sudden craze for PvP Werebears have started. I myself have made 2 Werebears both PvP, and one being extremely successful on USEAST named Maul-OfRage. The PvP Werebear is mainly made for straight up melee duels against other classes such as the Assassin, Paladin, or ShapeShift druid. It is possible to duel Amazons and Sorceresses but its much more difficult with a bear then with a wolf.
Skills
There are ways of building your skill tree as a Werebear (WB). You can either go the Oak path for the extra life or the Heart path for the extra
damage and Attack rating. You can get Hunger and FireClaws or just stick with good old Maul. You can even add a few ravens for block lock or cyclone armor for an elemental shield. It just depends on taste.
My Skills I used for Maul of Rage:
Maxed Lycanthropy
Maxed Werebear
Maxed Maul
Maxed Heart of Wolverine
10 pts into Ravens
1 pt into Shockwave
Rest into Cyclone Armor
I chose Heart of Wolverine because bears have trouble getting the first few Maul hits in because it takes a few hits for your actual attack rating to increase along with damage. Also more AR breaks through those annoying blocking freaks out there =]. Oak is nice if you can get enough AR charms to replace the effect of missing a few times early in the match.
I also chose Ravens because at level 10 I believe they hit 22 times each and they can cause some nice block stuns on anyone especially paladins =]. Also Cyclone armor with those remaining pts seemed to absorb more then the skill tree says it does. After being hit by a
Baranars Star once with all its elemental dmg I still had 1 little white swirling thing around my body at
level 1 cyclone armor (which is suppose to only absorb 49 dmg I believe).
Shockwave is a necessity.. Its great for someone who is trying to run away and great for right when the battle begins and you can stun the guy then get the first hit in.
(Shockwave is blockable by shields). =]
Hunger is also nice but the -75 dmg doesn't hurt anyone, and it probably wont leech much back with the 1 handed weapons you will be using. People also want to use Fireclaws for the extra AR, it just
doesn't lay the damage, and damage is needed for the leech so I don't find this a very good skill for PvP but for PvM it is nice for a low AR bear.
Gear (Note: I'm not going to put any 1.08 gear in here, I find them all dupes these days)
Weapon:
Rich: Griswolds Cadaceus | Fury Phaseblade
Poor: Eth Sazabi Sword | Eth'd Lightsabre
Armor:
Rich or Poor: Shaftstop (kind of necessary)
Helm:
Jalals Mane or Crown of Thieves
(If you need the mana leech then use a Vamp Gaze)
Amulet:
Highlords Wrath or Catseye (I prefer Highlords)
Boots:
Sigon Boots, IK boots, Aldurs Advance, Gore Riders
Gloves:
Sigon Gaunts (With boots you get 10% leech), IK Gaunts, Bloodfists, Sanders
Belt:
String of Ears at Least 10% dmg Reduc
Shield:
Stormshield (kind of necessary guys sorry if your poor)
Ring #1:
Rich: Dual Leech ring with +stats or resists
Poor: a Rare Leech ring with a +stat (If you don't get dual leech please use a Gaze for a helm)
Ring #2:
Ravenfrost (MUST HAVE) Preferably a +AR one or better yet a perfect =P
(Also Carry Absorption gear if its a public duel with sorceresses, if its a private duel like the West Fellas on Gimmeitam
don't =] cause they’ve got their rules =D)
Charms:
ShapeShift Charms
Vita Charms
Hit Recovery Charms
AR Charms
R/W Charms (For annoying Amazons)
+Max Dmg Charms
Resist Charms
*All these charms are viable and can be switched when needed*
My Werebear used a triple shael'd Griswolds Redemption, with Shaftstop, Stormshield, String, Crown of Thieves, Highlords, Dual leech Resist ring, Ravenfrost, few SS charms,
a lot of Max dmg AR Life Charms, and Small Vitas with Hit Recovery.
Some also may be saying "What about Hands of Broc for Dual leech?" The gloves don't
exactly have the greatest mods on them so that's why I did not include it in my list.
Speed is key amongst bears. Its funny to see how other wolves or so will say "HOLY COW YOUR FAST!" Or if your in a channel and people ask
what's better wolves or bears and you say bear and get slammed by wolves, then you can go prove them wrong because most say bears speed is horrid.
My bear used a triple shael'd cadaceus adding up to 110 IAS on his weapon, please do remember Equipment IAS does not help a wolf or bear, they all rely on the weapon
IAS only. So please don't say "Why not 20 IAS gloves?" Etc.
Most bears that use Oak will probably rely on an Eth weapon, yes I know Eth is the cheapest thing in the world, but Assassins without eth or a Oak Werebear without eth is just not a viable PvP character unless they can improve there attack rating. Also for all the
Baranars Star Werebears out there, you've got a slow weapon for a bear =].
Vs Classes
Bowazon: I hate these you hate these we all hate these... What else can I say.. equip the R/W and charge!!! When you get near them try to use a little Shockwave here and knock
'em into a dodging frenzy and when they get stunned make your move. If they have 100 arrows going at you by the time you get there, then they just got a cheap kill its almost like town guarding I believe.
Jabazon | Javazon: If I do see a Jabazon she will probably just stick to jabbing you and not run and throw. There quite annoying because they can have some nice speed and damage, and there dodging and block is like double the fun =\. Just maul her like a
Paladin and she will get so stunned she will have no clue what hit her. For a Java Lit Fury
Amazon, Chase em down and get some Lit Absorption Gear if possible on.
Sorceresses: Frozen Orbers wont do much with the Raven and Cold Absorption on unless its hell then it may do a little dmg.
T-Stormers and Nova Gals can be a pain they will Tele next to you and there nova can send u into a stun frenzy if they have
a lot of fast cast on only allowing you to get maybe 2-3 hits just hope there stunned well on those hits.
Firewall... what a joke =]
Barbarians: If there holding a maul, axe whatever you want to call it, then Just hold shift and smack em with maul as they
whirlwind by. Its almost like dueling with a Wolf. Some Dual sworders that Eth though can be a pain. As for the rest with
Stormshields and PI gear... Hit Escape and then Save and Exit game. There is almost no chance for a PI Storm Barb to be taken down by a Bear unless its melee.
Trap Assassins: These gals tend to hit you with some Lit
Sentries and Mind Blast you till your brains fall out. Then they will come in with some Cobra Strikes to finish you off, yet
that's your chance to finish them. Most trappers tend to go dual claw since they want the extra +skills from there
Bartucs. This then means they have horrid block and you can just smack em. =]
MA Assassins: These can be a pain, if they are peaked at IAS with some cruel claws and can control there charges well, then you will have some competition. I
haven't meant an assassin that could beat me, but there about as difficult as paladins. Just start off with a shockwave stun them then move in from there. (They usually have
Stormshields)
Paladins: The greatest thing about dueling paladins with
a lot of IAS is that you get that wonderful ting sound every time you smack there shield and knock em into shield locks. Its fun they
aren't difficult. If they smite and charge hold shift and smack em it helps a bit but Chargers and Smiters are your main difficulty as a bear cant hit
repeatedly. For Fohadins, get the resists gear on and R/W charms shock wave em as some
don't go for good block etc.
Werewolf Druids: Ahh the brother to the bear, some are smart some are not. I wont give any tips to werewolves but shockwave if they run before dying and shockwave before the actual beatdown, then just smack smack smack,
they'll be stunned so much they wont get a hit on you, or a maybe a few hits, but you'll leech it back =D.
Werebears Druids: Evil battle EVIL EVIL EVIL. Actually
I've only had 2 WB to WB battles. 1 against Fear_bear, and another against a Fury Scourge Werebear. Ended up beating the Fury Scourge with a Fury Cryptic Sword, but Fear_bear I didnt because I hadn't gotten my Redemption yet. He was using Fury Phase I was using a Eth'd Sazabi, so he wont with him having 3/4 of his life still left. But If
I were to duel him with a Gris Redemption, that would be one heck of a battle.
Elementalist: Umm what? I've met one, he tried twister and
Armageddon, my life was too high I shocked waved his little shield block behind and won =]. Elementalists are good though I plan on making one.
Necromancers: The hidden deadly grandfathers of DiabloII. These guys can be really annoying with there run walk and
Decrepify and Iron maiden and Bone walls and what not. Try to get behind em and Shock wave them and get MDR gear if you can for these battles.. These duels are rare but there out there.
